Inspirations include the legendary groups led by Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Gene Harris and Benny Green, as well as the Ray Brown Trio. At its heart are swing, musical communication and the special energy that can only emerge from a small, closely attuned ensemble.
The trio combines the elegance and clarity of the classic piano-trio format with a direct, vibrant approach to playing. The double bass is not merely the foundation, but an equal voice in the musical dialogue. Alongside swing, the repertoire also includes blues, bossa nova and carefully selected jazz standards.
Kenneth is my favourite pianist – for his exceptional touch, his deep sense of swing and the way he listens and responds musically in every moment. He performs with the Big Band of Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Torsten Zwingenberger 4tet, has worked with Katharine Mehrling, Gitte Hænning and Biréli Lagrène, and accompanies New York vocalist Lauren Henderson on European tours.
Dexter is my favourite drummer – an exceptionally musical and sensitive player who creates energy without ever overcrowding the music. The Samoan–New Zealand drummer, composer and bandleader is a Fulbright Scholar. He has performed with Arturo O’Farrill’s Grammy-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and leads the Asia-Pacific Jazz Orchestra.
On double bass, Hendrik Nehls combines rhythmic foundation, melodic playing and the role of musical mediator. As bandleader, he brings three individual voices together in a trio equally committed to tradition and to the moment.
